The best tactics were set in seven ranks. The first three rows would fire first - the first crouching, the second kneeling and the third standing. The fourth, fifth and sixth rows fire whilst the first, second and third rows reload their weapons. The seventh row only fires if they’re needed.
In battle there were certain positions that people carried out. For example grenadiers carried grenades and specialized in throwing them, dragoons rode into battle then dismounted to fight and cavalry had swords and pistols - they were also used as shock troops - they collected information on the enemies moves and prevented them from doing the same. Also the artillery fired guns close to the river.
The highland charge was a simple and effective way of attacking the enemy. Jacobites and highlanders charged straight at the enemy and fired muskets from a close distance. They then hacked and slashed with claymore swords. A successful highland charge would make the enemy run away at the site.
A popular weapon to use whilst fighting was the claymore broadsword and targe shield. They were great up close but rubbish if the enemy was far away! The idea was to get close to them as soon as possible.
