She was a Jacobite heroine and daughter of Ranald of Milton and his wife Marion. Her father died when she was a child and her mother was abducted and married Hugh of Skye.
In 1746, age twenty-four, she was living on an island when Bonnie Prince Charlie took refuge there after the Battle of Culloden. The MacDonalds were secretly sympathetic to the Jacobite cause and Flora promised to help the prince escape.
The commander of the local militia was her stepfather and he gave her passes for ten people in a boat. The prince was disguised as a man called Betty Burke. They landed in Kilbride. The prince hid in the rocks whilst Flora found help for him.
People became suspicious of her and she was brought to London for helping the prince. After being in the Tower of London, she was allowed outside under the guard of a messenger/gaoler. In 1747 she was released and then in 1750 she married Captain Stan MacDonald of Kingsburgh.
In 1773 they emigrated to the north. Alan was taken prisoner in an American war and in 1779 Flora returned to Scotland on a ship. During the journey the ship was attacked by a government person that wanted to steal their money. She refused to leave the deck and was wounded in the arm.
Later on, Flora had lots of sons and two daughters. She died at the age of 68 - her grave is in Kilmuir Cemetry.
